KS2 Year6 Teaching Notes

This shape is reflected in both mirror lines.
Which of the following shows the position of the second reflection?

Term: 3
Test: 1
Question: 23
Question parts: 1
Year/Level: 6/5
Vocabulary: reflection, mirror line

Question content

Part 1
Strand: Shape, space and measures
Attribute: Shape and space
Key skill: 46 Reflective symmetry, reflection and translation
Numeracy Strategy: 2 Sketch reflection of a simple shape in two mirror lines at right angles

Item analysis
The question is designed to test that students can visualise the reflection of a shape in two mirror lines that are at right angles to each other.
1. A incorrect
Student has chosen the shape that has been reflected in the vertical mirror line only.
2. B incorrect
Student has chosen the shape that has been reflected in the horizontal mirror line only.
3. C correct
4. D incorrect
Student has chosen the shape that has been reflected in one mirror line and then rotated 90° rather than being reflected in both. Due to its shape, this is very similar to the correct version.

Future instruction
Provide students with opportunities to explore reflections of shapes in two mirror lines, firstly using mirrors to help them visualise the reflections and later using squared paper to help position the shapes and their reflections.

Constructed response
The question can be delivered as a constructed response versus multiple choice in the following way:

Sketch the position of this shape after it has been reflected in both mirror lines:
